How does the free "Charter" account work?

Choose one of the plans and sign up. Within 24 hours, I'll manually upgrade your account to the special "Charter" account type that gives you 30 sites checked every 5 minutes (as well as alerting multiple emails). You'll get free service for six months. After that, you can keep the "Charter" plan for the same price as the "Medium" plan ($12/month) for as long as you keep the subscription.

How do you handle alerting?

Any time the status of a site changes, an email goes out alerting you to the change. Alerts go to your account email address or to the alternate email address (if provided).

Will your service throw off my traffic stats?

Our checks will not trigger Google Analytics. Logging done by the web server (Apache, IIS, etc.) will register our checks. However, our traffic is tagged with "Am I Down?" in the "User Agent" to make filtering easy (as most logging tools will let you remove entries based on user agent to eliminate web monitoring and search engine bots).

What if I need more than 60 sites?

We do offer a 'Super' account that includes the same features as a "Large" account, with 200 sites, at $49/month. If you need something even bigger, drop me an email and we'll create something that will work for your needs.

Can I get alerts via SMS?

If your mobile carrier gives you an email address that coverts to SMS (most US carriers do), you can.

How does your service know if my site is down?

Essentially, our service loads your site up like a web browser. It will open whatever URL you feed it and "fails" if it gets anything other than a 2xx HTTP response. For example, a check on "http://domain.com/" will fail if it forwards to "http://www.domain.com/"...because of a 3xx redirect.

What timezone are your servers in?

While the servers are currently in the US Pacific timezone, your account will let you choose a timezone that all alert time stamps will display in! Wherever you are, Am I Down? will user your local time zone.

Who built this thing anyway?

Am I Down? is the second subscription service (and fifth small business) from Ruby On Rails developer Tim Harvey, owner of Literacy5 and ShipperTools.com. He created Am I Down? to fill a need he had for monitoring the many client sites he creates. He continues to do consulting work while managing ShipperTools and Am I Down?.
